First, make sure the soil/surface you are planting the sod to is reasonably free of stones and large chunks of old grass and weeds. Sod seams should not line up. Imagine the bricks on your house and follow that pattern.
It is best to start using a straight edge if possible. But remember to start at the top of the yard so not to trample the new plant.
Make sure all the joints are adjoined tightly.
Once the lawn is installed, if you have access, a roller can be used to eliminate air pockets and create a good bond between sod and soil.
Finally, water the lawn. Forget using the clock in the equation. Make sure the soil is muddy underneath.
